Raw Edge Stocking Hack

Updated: Jul 1, 2020

I love a good exposed raw edge. On my jeans, on my throw pillows, and now, on my Christmas Stockings. Such a great trend. Not only because its so beautifully undone but also because it is also JUST. SO. EASY. Are your jeans too long? Cut them off and call it good, doesn't even have to be straight.

I'm about to blow your mind with how fast and easy this hack is. Cut pattern piece. Sew one seam. DONE. I'd venture to bet you could have a finished stocking in 5 minutes or less. (Dang, why didn't I time myself too...)

Anyhow, not only is this so flippin' easy but gorgeous too in that raw, natural but worn and rough way. This is your dream cowboy in a stocking. 🤤❤️

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

¾ Yard of Fabric (you'll actually be able to make 2 from a piece this size)

6" Hanging Trim

Matching Thread (kind of a must on this on because the stitching will be exposed)

Fabric Suggestions: For this raw edge I would particularly recommend a woven fabric so it softens into that lightly frayed look. Think woven cottons, linen, flannel, plaid, canvas, twill, denim. Do whatever you like, the sky is the limit but this is a good starting place.

PATTERN PREPARATION:

1. Print the PDF pattern, piece it together, tape it up & cut. it. out. (cue Uncle Joey gif here) on the OUTER CUTTING LINES.

2. Take the stocking cuff pattern piece and turn it upside down, line up the STITCHING LINE (inner line) with the top stitching line of the stocking body. Tape those together making 1 new Stocking Body/Cuff pattern piece.

3. Cut 2 Stocking Body/Cuff from your fabric.

CONSTRUCTION:

1. Pin around with WRONG SIDES TOGETHER (most likely this is also how the fabric was already laying when you cut. it. out. (is Uncle Joey starting to get annoying here? Sorry, not sorry))

2. Fold your 6" hanging trim in half. Measure 6" down from the outer corner of the stocking and pin your trim in between the stocking pieces at the 6" mark. It should look like the picture but again, with the trim in between the fabrics.

3. Sew around at ⅜” backstitching at the beginning and end.

4. Fold down your "cuff" around 5 ½".

5. Press it, don't press it, or toss in the dryer for a little worn wrinkle (best with linen). Maybe help the fraying process a little and trim off any threads that need it. Do what brings you joy.
